Bogota is the capital of Colombia; It is the largest city with the highest population density, with about eight million people and the most important political center.

 

The city is located in the center of the country at an altitude of 2600 meters, with a flat extension called "Sabana de Bogotá" west of the Andes. This prime location is a site with a nice spring weather and beautiful flowers all year. The average temperature is 14oC and ranges from 9 to 22oC. December, January, February and March are the driest months; June and July are rainy; August, hot, sunny and windy. Bogotá has several types of neighborhoods: large buildings are at the International Centre; La Candelaria is the name of colonial historical center, the seat of government and the national administration; Mercy, Teusaquillo, are north and are characterized by English architectural structure; Chapinero, Avenida Chile, Calle 72 and Calle 100 comprise the commercial and financial district; in the southern suburbs of the working class is located.

 

This city was founded on August 6, 1538 with the name of Santa Fe by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, who beat the Chibcha Indians near Bacatá; indigenous name for the capital of the confederation of Zipa. This village was part of the occupied muiscas an indigenous group of the Chibcha language family territory. In 1717, the reign of the New Granada was established here; in 1819, Simón Bolívar chose it as the capital of Gran Colombia in which were included Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

 

Bogotá today is a modern city with an intense and vibrant intellectual culture and social life. Picturesque with an important architectural heritage, with the best pre Columbian art collection in the world and fantastic museums, is also a city of futuristic architecture with huge and modern buildings. Poverty and prosperity are contrasts that make this city is fascinating, yet aggressive.

No visit to Bogotá would be complete without a visit to the amazing Gold Museum and the Botero Museum, the city is also home to many museums and art galleries.
